The purpose of Occupational Therapy (OT) is to help increase functional independence in daily life while preventing or minimizing disability. OT looks at the body as a connected whole working to help children take information from their environment, process it and then appropriately respond to their surroundings. This is the proprioceptive (sense of body position in space) and vestibular (balance) that should work together to help function as a whole. Poor proprioceptive processing or low tone can lead to clumsiness, poor attention span, communication, body control, posture, writing and even poor some social interaction.
