Developmental Checklist

0-6 months

  • Tracks objects with eyes
  • Coordinating suck, swallow, breath sequence
  • Sleeping for 4-10 hour intervals
  • Communicating hunger, fear, or discomfort by crying
  • Tolerates tummy time and elevates head and upper trunk while weightbearing on forearms to see a toy
  • Rolls from back to left and right sides with opposite arm crossing the midline
  • Brings both feet to mouth for play or grabs feet with hands while lying on back
  • Lying on back, extends arm towards toy and engages in mutual touching with fingers
  • Moves rattle 15 degrees

6-12 months

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Playing for 2-3 minutes with a single toy
  • Reaching for nearby objects
  • Sleeping 10-12 hours with only 1 awakening
  • Tolerating a range of different textured foods
  • Drinking from a cup
  • Holding a bottle or cup independently
  • Using tongue to move food around mouth
  • Feeding self small crackers or other small pieces of food 
  • Sits unsupported
  • Maintains balance while moving hands and arms to grasp a toy
  • Rolls from back to stomach
  • Sitting, brings hands together to secure block
  • Transfers cube to other hand and picks up 2nd cube with original hand
  • Bangs cup on table
  • Moves rattle through 90 degree arc
  • Creeps 5 ft. on hands and knees (9-11 months)
  • Lowers from standing position to a sitting position without falling (9-11 months)
  • Claps hands (9-11 months)
  • Removes both socks (9-11 months)
  • Places 3-7 cubes in a cup (9-11 months)
  • Uses pincer grasp to manipulate cheerios with arm and wrist off the table (9-11 months)

1-2 years

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Corrals 8 inch ball while sitting without losing balance (12-14 months)
  • Scribbles (12-14 months)
  • Opens book (12-14 months)
  • Begins walking and becomes more coordinated progressing towards 18-24 months
  • Begins creeping up/down steps (12-18 months) and progresses to walking up steps (18-24 months)
  • Distinguishing between edible and inedible objects (18 months)
  • Flings small ball and begins to throw ball underhanded 3 feet (15-24 months)
  • Kicks ball 3 feet without losing balance (15-24 months)
  • Stacks 2-3 cubes (15-24 months)
  • Places 2-3 shapes into correct holes in formboard (15-24 months)
  • Grasps maker with thumb and 1st finger towards paper (15-24 months)
  • Draws vertical line (15-24 months)
  • Looking in the right spot for hidden objects
  • Playing next to children 
  • Imitating adult behavior
  • Has an awareness of a parent's approval or disapproval of their actions
  • Understanding common dangers of hot objects, stairs, glass
  • Tolerating nappy changes
  • Settling themselves to sleep at night or during the day
  • Attempting to brush teeth
  • Knowing where familiar items are kept
  • Removing their own socks and shoes
  • Cooperating with dressing by extending an arm or leg


2-3 years

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Jumps down from object 16-18 inches high
  • Walks down 4 steps
  • Runs 30 feet
  • Removes screw on lid from bottle
  • Stacks 8-10 blocks
  • Strings 2-4 beads
  • Draws horizontal line, then circle
  • Catches 8 in ball with arms extended (31-36 months)
  • Stands with hands on hips on 1 foot for 3 seconds (31-36 months)
  • Throws ball 7 feet with more coordinated arm and body movements (31-36 months)
  • Using toilet with assistance and having daytime control
  • Sitting to look at a book independently
  • Unbuttoning large buttons
  • Expressing emotions
  • Engaging in imaginative play
  • Distinguishing between urination and bowel movements, names correctly
  • Using a napkin to wipe face and hands
  • Feeding self simple meals using a fork or spoon
  • Enjoying/ tolerating messy play


3-4 years

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Cutting paper in 2 pieces
  • Draws cross
  • Grasps marker with thumb and pad of index finger, other 3 fingers are secure against palm, upper portion of marker rests between thumb and index fingers
  • Begins buttoning buttons
  • Throws ball 10 feet
  • Hits target with small ball using underhand toss (37-42 months) and overhand toss (43-48 months) from 5 feet
  • Hops on 1 foot
  • Walk forward 8 feet on line without stepping off
  • Run 15 yards in 6 seconds or less
  • Taking turns
  • Brushing teeth independently
  • Playing with 2 to 3 children in a group
  • Dressing and undressing self (only requiring assistance with laces, buttons, and other fasteners in awkward places)
  • Toileting independently
  • Independently putting items away
  • Tolerating different clothing textures, seams, and tags
  • Feeding self without difficulty

4-5 years

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Walks backward 5 steps without stepping off 4 inch line
  • Completes forward roll
  • Gallops 10 feet smoothly
  • Stands on tip toes without losing balance
  • Hits target from 12 feet using overhand toss
  • Catches ball from 12 feet using hands only
  • Draws square
  • Cuts out circle printed on paper, then square
  • Builds steps of 6 blocks
  • Completes 3 sit ups
  • Touches each finger to thumb
  • Balances on each foot for 10 seconds
  • Developing friendships 
  • Expressing emotions
  • Following rules
  • Choosing weather appropriate clothes
  • Dress self independently
  • Playing with 4-5 children in a group 

5-6 years

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Skips 10 feet
  • Completes 5 sit ups
  • Performs 8 push-ups
  • Bounces and catches small ball
  • Folds paper in half with edges parallel
  • Morning routine at school (putting bag away, swapping readers, putting drink bottle in correct spot, etc.)
  • Opening lunch boxes, zip lock bags, food packaging
  • Able to sit at a desk, follow teacher instructions, and independently doing simple in class assignments 
  • Coping in busy/noisy environment
  • Settling independently for sleep
  • Packing a bag for school or other outings with assistance 

6-7 years

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Showering independently
  • Packing a bag for school or other outings with little assistance or prompting
  • Independently toileting during the day and night
  • Telling the time
  • Preparing simple meals (e.g. cereal, sandwich) 
  • Inhibiting the need to talk and ask questions 

7-8 years

  • All above previously mentioned milestones 
  • Telling the time and displaying time management skills
